Upper St. John Valley

Sentier NB Trail/Trans Canada Trail: Ambling peacefully from Woodstock to Grand Falls, the Sentier NB Trail in this region, which also doubles as the Trans Canada Trail, provides an insightful glimpse of rural New Brunswick both past and present. This multi-use trail, built on abandoned Canadian Pacific rail line, is perfect for any type of user. It's gentle grades and multiple access points allow you to tailor an adventure to suit your personal needs, from a short walk to a multi-day trek on foot or bicycle.

The majestic Saint John River provides the backdrop as the trail winds along its' gentle banks and through the subtle foothills of the northern limits of the Appalachian Mountains. Moving northerly from Woodstock the trail passes through some of the best agricultural land in the province - this is potato country, the center being in Florenceville, home to the worlds' largest potato processing company.

Continuing northward, the topography slowly changes from the flat floodplain of the lower river to the lush hardwood covered hills of the Appalachian Mountains. After crossing to the westerly side of the river in Perth-Andover, all the way to the magnificent gorge in Grand Falls, it is the mountains that define the course of the trail and the pace of life. Here the forest is king. Large stands of second growth hardwood tower overhead, giving cover to a thick green carpet of flora that is the forest floor and home to a plethora of animals large and small, from the squirrel to the black bear. Most importantly the mountains define the channel and act as the headwaters and filtering system for the rainwater that slowly percolates through the soil and into the streams and brooks which feed the river.

Trail Conditions: The trail is in good condition for most of its distance in this area but a hybrid or mountain bike is recommended for longer trips. It is important to note that in order to cross from Woodstock to Grafton you have to use the Grafton Traffic bridge. Similarly to follow the trail to Grand Falls you have to cross the traffic bridge in Perth-Andover. If you continue straight out of Perth on the same side of the river you will be heading up towards Plaster Rock.

Longest continuous section: 120 km (Woodstock to Grand Falls)

Trail Connections: International Appalachian Trail (Aroostook to Campbellton), Sentier NB Trail route #4 (Perth-Andover to Plaster Rock).

Features: Wildlife, hydroelectric dams, people, trees, food and history characterize the journey from Woodstock to Grand Falls. Pay attention to the bridges on this stretch as both Grand Falls and Aroostook have spectacular converted train bridges and the trail passes the longest covered bridge in the world in Hartland. Bring your camera and your walking shoes and experience rural New Brunswick at its' best.
