NB Trail/Trans Canada Trail:
This region is characterized by two principle features: the Bay
of Fundy with its rugged coastline and enormous tides, and the St.
John River and its inland lakes and tributaries. The trails in this
region also reflect these two geographic realities.
Within
the City of Saint John the trail uses city sidewalks from the Reversing
Falls to Rockwood Park through some of Saint John's most picturesque
residential areas. The multi use trail starts up again in Rockwood
Park and runs about eight kilometres from one corner of the park
to the other. Rockwood Park is one of the largest municipal parks
in North America and can be an adventure all on its own to explore.
Trails branch off in all directions and you can also find both a
Zoo and Golf Course within the park boundaries.
The
other section of completed trail is the Fundy Trail. This trail
starts just east of St. Martins and follows the Bay of Fundy Coast
line for 12 km to the mouth of the Big Salmon River. The trail presents
a series of spectacular views and breathtaking vistas of the Bay
from which it takes its name. The trail is paralleled by a low speed
scenic roadway that ends at the Big Salmon River Interpretive centre
where refreshments and souvenirs can be purchased. The centre's
staff are also happy to tell you about the history, geography, flora
and fauna of the region.
Trail
conditions: The trails in the Greater Saint John region are
very well maintained and in excellent condition. Expect these to
be a little more difficult than other trails in the Province, as
these are not built on abandoned rail lines. There are numerous
short but steep slopes on both trails.
Longest
continuous section: 12 km (Fundy Trail)
Trail
connections: Both of these trails are part of the Trans Canada
Trail. You can also connect to the Fundy Foot Path that runs from
the Big Salmon River to Fundy National Park. In Saint John the Irving
Nature Park is not far and Rockwood Park can take days to explore.
Features:
The Tides of Fundy are the principal draw for the region, but Saint
John has a number of festivals through out the year and day adventures
can be found through out the region. Don't forget to visit the Reversing
Falls in Saint John or the Caves in St. Martin.
