Miramichi Trail

Sentier NB Trail: The Miramichi River conjures up images of salmon fishing, historic log drives and autumn foliage. Running from Astle to Quarryville, Sentier New Brunswick Trail follows the South West Branch of the historic Miramichi River northward towards the ocean. Gentle grades and long curves characterize this multi-use trail built on an abandoned rail line. Trail has also been built in several historic areas of the City of Miramichi though the connection between it and Quarryville has not yet been completed.

Beginning in Astle on bluffs above the Taxis River, the trail winds through second and third growth boreal forest northward towards the town of Boiestown. Keep a watchful eye. You may see deer, moose, fox and a variety of other wildlife in these rugged woods. At the confluence of the Taxis and Miramichi rivers, you will find Boiestown. As the trail comes down to river level, you will get a glimpse of life in central New Brunswick. The forest, through logging and salmon fishing, is the heartbeat of the region.

The City of Miramichi adds an additional dimension to the area through its maritime connection. Located near the mouth of the river bearing the same name, the City has a strong fishing history and is as well known for its lobster as it is for its salmon and forestry. Many of the local trails located in historic and picturesque areas such as French Fort Cove boast tales of hardship and adventure including stories of pirates, buried treasure and even one about a Headless Nun.

Trail conditions: Expect the trail between Astle and Quarryville to be in good condition overall with a few rough spots. A hybrid or mountain bike is recommended on this section of trail. The trails in Miramichi are in excellent shape.

Features: If sightseeing is more your cup of tea, check out the suspended footbridge at Priceville, walk Doaktown's historic byways, visit the salmon and logging museums and other historic sites, or enjoy the unique perspectives the trail gives you on your journey along the river valley.

As in bygone days, it is still the mighty salmon, on its upriver journey to spawn, that gives this region its world-renowned reputation. On any given summer's day, you can see dozens of fisherman casting their lines into the dark pools at every turn on the river. If fishing is your fancy, numerous outfitters within walking distance of the trail will gladly provide their services. A number of locations will also rent canoes for a couple of days paddle if that is your preference.
